Croatia's Most Authentic Island
Unlike its more developed neighbors, Vis Island was a Yugoslav military base until 1989 and was closed to foreign visitors. This isolation preserved its authentic character, traditional architecture, and unspoiled nature. Today, Vis offers a glimpse of what all Croatian islands looked like decades ago.
Two Towns, Two Personalities
Vis Town
The main town on the northeastern side features elegant Venetian architecture, waterfront restaurants, and a relaxed atmosphere. The ancient Greek settlement of Issa was founded here in the 4th century BC, making it one of the oldest towns in Croatia.
Komiza
On the western side, Komiza is a traditional fishing village with colorful boats, narrow streets, and some of Croatia's best seafood restaurants. It's the departure point for Blue Cave excursions.
Must-See Attractions
The Blue Cave (Modra Spilja)
Located on nearby Bisevo Island, this natural wonder is Vis's most famous attraction. The cave's ethereal blue light draws visitors from around the world.
Stiniva Beach
Consistently ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches, this hidden cove is surrounded by dramatic cliffs. Best accessed by boat.
Green Cave (Zelena Spilja)
On Ravnik Island, you can actually swim inside this illuminated sea cave - a magical experience.
Military History
Explore abandoned Yugoslav military tunnels and submarine pens, remnants of the island's secretive past.
