The Islands with an Unfortunate Name
Don't let the name fool you - "Pakleni" comes from "paklina," the pine resin historically used to seal boats here, not from "pakao" (hell). In reality, these islands are heaven for beach lovers and boaters.
The Main Islands
Jerolim
The closest island to Hvar Town, Jerolim is famous for its naturist beaches (clothing-optional). The south side has a lovely beach bar, and the clear shallow water is perfect for swimming.
Marinkovac (Stipanska)
Home to the famous Carpe Diem Beach Club, where Hvar's party scene meets beautiful beaches. Even if clubbing isn't your thing, the beach itself is gorgeous.
Sveti Klement (St. Clement)
The largest island in the group, with the charming village of Palmizana. This is where you'll find some of Croatia's best restaurant-beach experiences, including the legendary Meneghello restaurant surrounded by botanical gardens.
Vlaka
Less developed with pristine nature and quiet coves. Perfect for those seeking solitude.
How to Get There
- Taxi boats: Run regularly from Hvar Town harbor (10-15 minutes)
- Private boat charter: Explore multiple islands at your own pace
- Kayak: The adventurous can paddle from Hvar (1-2 hours)
Best Beaches
- Stipanska Beach: Sandy bottom, beach bar, great swimming
- Palmizana Beaches: Multiple coves with restaurant access
- Mlini Beach: Quieter option on Marinkovac's western side
