Fresh From the Adriatic
The Dalmatian coast has a culinary tradition built around the sea. With crystal-clear waters and small-scale fishing still practiced, the seafood here is exceptionally fresh and simply prepared to let the natural flavors shine.
Must-Try Seafood Dishes
Grilled Fish (Riba na Zaru)
The simplest and arguably best way to enjoy Adriatic fish. Sea bream (orada), sea bass (brancin), or John Dory (kovac) grilled whole with olive oil, garlic, and herbs. Served with blitva (Swiss chard) and potatoes.
Black Risotto (Crni Rizot)
Creamy risotto made with cuttlefish and its ink, giving it a striking black color and rich, briny flavor. A signature Dalmatian dish you must try.
Brudet
A hearty fish stew made with multiple types of fish simmered in tomato sauce with garlic and wine. Every family has their own recipe passed down through generations.
Octopus Salad (Salata od Hobotnice)
Tender octopus mixed with olive oil, garlic, capers, and parsley. Often served as an appetizer, it's a perfect light start to a seafood meal.
Peka
While peka can be made with lamb, the seafood version with octopus (hobotnica ispod peke) is spectacular. Slow-cooked under a bell-shaped lid with potatoes and vegetables.
Scampi Buzara
Fresh scampi cooked in a sauce of white wine, garlic, breadcrumbs, and parsley. Perfect for mopping up with crusty bread.
Where to Eat

Seafood Tips
- Fresh fish is typically sold by the kilogram - ask the price before ordering
- Daily catch depends on what the fishermen bring in
- Lunch is often better value than dinner at the same restaurant
- Ask for local recommendations - hidden konobas often have the best food
